Mela

Maltese for visitors and expats

Everyone in Malta speaks English. Say it in Maltese anyway.

Ten cards a session, about five minutes a day. It works offline, there is no account to make, and nothing to set up.

Who it's for

Written for the week you visit, and the years after you stay.

Two people use Mela, and the fourteen packs are ordered for both of them.

You land on Thursday

Bonġu at the pastizzi counter, grazzi to the driver, skużani through a full bus. Pack one is 30 cards and covers a short trip on its own — and the whole catalogue sits on the phone, so it works on the plane and anywhere the signal doesn't.

You have been here three years

Your colleagues switch to Maltese at lunch and switch back for you. Ten cards a day is small enough to keep up with in a working week, and after a fortnight you start catching the edges of it.

How it works

Small sessions, timed so they stick.

1

Ten cards a session

Always ten, never configurable. About five minutes, then you're done for today.

2

Cards come back on time

A card you knew returns in 1, 3, 7, then 21 days. A card you missed comes back tomorrow.

3

A streak worth keeping

One session a day keeps it alive. Two reminders a day at most, both from your own phone.

What's inside

Fourteen packs, in the order you actually meet the language.

4 sections that run from your first ten minutes on the island to holding your own in a conversation. Every card is spoken aloud in two Maltese voices, with plain-English pronunciation and no IPA — and the whole catalogue ships inside the app, so none of it needs a connection.

Privacy

Everything stays on your phone.

  • No account, ever. No email, no password, nothing to sign in to.
  • Progress, streaks and owned packs are stored on the device.
  • Anything you unlock comes back through your App Store or Google Play account, so it returns without Mela ever knowing who you are.
  • The trade-off, said out loud: a new phone starts your study history at zero.

Start

30 cards cover your first morning.

Bonġu, jekk jogħġbok, grazzi ħafna — the words you need before you have had a coffee. Ten cards a session, no account to make and nothing to set up, and the whole catalogue is already on the phone. Enough to get through a week here without anyone switching to English for you.
